“SHOW EMMA MY SCHOOL,” Martha pleaded. She hung over the seat of the truck and made sure she talked into her father’s right ear. She wanted to make sure he showed Emma everything in town, because she didn’t want to go home yet. Daddy would go outside and not come back until dark and Emma would try to cook something weird and make everyone take baths.

“I’m heading that way,” her father said. “Sit back down, Martha, and put your seat belt on.”

She obeyed, but not before she saw Emma drawing something on the back of an envelope. “What are you writing, Emma?”

“I’m drawing a map and taking notes about where you all go to school. And at what times.”

“I love school,” Melissa said softly. “I wish I went all day instead of kindergarten.”

“Mackie doesn’t go tomorrow, does she?”

“No,” her father said. “Tomorrow’s Tuesday.”

“She gets to stay home with Emma.” Martha wondered what they would do all morning. Make more Jell-O? Play dolls? She knew they would have fun.

“But I pick up Melissa at kindergarten at twelve. And then we’ll do the grocery shopping together. I think we’re all too tired to bother with that today.” Emma turned around and smiled at Martha. “And you come home at three o’clock on the school bus, right?”

“Will you be home?” Suddenly it was terribly important that Emma say yes.

“Of course. Where else would I be?”

She didn’t know, but she really really wanted Emma to stay on the ranch. Martha wished she could remember her mother. She was sure her mother would have been waiting for her after school. She would have cookies ready, like Jennifer’s mother did. She would smell good and she would know all of the answers to Martha’s questions. A mother would want to see all of her papers and would kiss her and hug her when she walked in the door.

Martha sat back in her seat and looked out the window. She liked hugs. She’d heard Daddy tell Aunt Ruth he was going to ask somebody out on a date. She didn’t like that. Daddy had Emma now.

They all did.
